Wheelchair Accessible Bus in Adelaide: Travel Together With Your Support Network

Here’s something that shouldn’t be hard, but often is: a wheelchair user wanting to travel somewhere with the people they love or the support worker who knows them best.

Most disability transport in Adelaide puts the wheelchair user in a modified van — alone, or with a driver who doesn’t know them — while everyone else travels separately. It works. But it’s not the same as being in the same vehicle, sharing the same journey.

iCOMMUNITY Australia Australia’s wheelchair accessible bus changes that. One vehicle. One trip. The wheelchair user, their support worker, family members or friends — all travelling together. NDIS funded.

This guide explains exactly how it works, who it’s for, and how to book it.

What Makes iCOMMUNITY Australia’s Bus Different

iCOMMUNITY Australia Australia operates a purpose-built, brand-new wheelchair accessible bus, and not a retrofitted van, not a converted family car. It’s designed from the ground up to carry:

  • 1 wheelchair user (manual or power wheelchair, secured with a professional tie-down system)
  • Up to 4 additional passengers — support workers, family members, carers, or friends
  • A trained, NDIS-registered driver who knows our participants

The key difference: Every other Adelaide disability transport provider sends a WAV van for the wheelchair user alone. iCOMMUNITY Australia’s bus means the whole group travels together — the wheelchair user isn’t separated from the people they need most.

That matters more than it might sound. For someone with complex communication needs, having their regular support worker in the vehicle — not just a driver — changes the entire experience. For a family getting to a specialist appointment together, it removes the stress of two separate bookings, two separate vehicles, two separate arrival times.

Who Is the Wheelchair Accessible Bus For?

iCOMMUNITY Australia’s bus is built for NDIS participants across four key use cases:

Not sure whether you need a wheelchair accessible bus or another type of transport? Our guide to wheelchair accessible transport in Adelaide covers all the options available to NDIS participants, from individual vehicle transfers to group bus services.

1. Medical and Allied Health Appointments

Getting to specialist appointments, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, or hospital visits is one of the most common transport needs for NDIS participants. Our bus means your support worker or a family member can be in the vehicle with you — not following behind in their own car.

  • Specialist appointments at RAH, Women’s and Children’s, Flinders Medical Centre
  • Physiotherapy, OT, speech therapy and other allied health
  • Dental and optometry appointments
  • Day hospital and outpatient services

NDIS funding note: Transport to medical and allied health appointments is typically funded under Core Supports — Assistance with Daily Life or Transport. If transport isn’t currently in your plan, it can often be added at your next plan review. Ask your Support Coordinator or LAC.

2. Social and Community Activities

iCOMMUNITY Australia runs the iBelong and Sociability programs — regular group social activities for NDIS participants across Adelaide. The bus is the engine behind these programs, getting participants to and from activities safely and comfortably, with their support team on board.

  • Community events, markets, cafes, and social outings
  • Sporting events and recreational activities
  • Arts, music and cultural programs
  • Regular social groups across Adelaide suburbs

For participants in iBelong or Sociability, transport isn’t an afterthought — it’s part of the program. We pick you up, run the activity, and bring you home. One booking, not three.

3. Day Programs and Group Outings

If you’re part of a day program, a disability support organisation, or a group that meets regularly, the bus can be booked to transport the group together. With up to 4 passengers alongside the wheelchair user, it works perfectly for small group outings where everyone travels as one.

  • NDIS day program transport
  • Group outings to Adelaide’s accessible venues
  • Regular weekly or fortnightly group transport runs
  • One-off special occasion transport

4. School and Therapy Centre Runs

For children and young people with disabilities, getting to school or therapy regularly — safely, reliably, on time — is non-negotiable. Our bus can accommodate the child in their wheelchair alongside a parent, carer or support worker for the journey.

  • Special schools and support units
  • Early intervention therapy centres
  • After-school programs and activities
  • School excursions and incursions with accessible transport needs

How NDIS Funding Works for Wheelchair Bus Transport

One of the most common questions we get: can I use my NDIS plan to pay for this? In most cases, yes — but it depends on which category the transport falls under in your plan.

For a deeper look at NDIS transport budget categories, common claiming myths, and real participant examples, see our comprehensive guide: How NDIS Funds Wheelchair Bus Transport in Adelaide.

Core Supports — Transport

If your NDIS plan includes a dedicated transport budget under Core Supports, this is the most straightforward funding pathway. You can use it with any registered NDIS transport provider, including iCOMMUNITY Australia. We claim directly from your plan — you don’t pay out of pocket.

Core Supports — Assistance with Daily Life

When your support worker accompanies you on the bus — to an appointment, a social activity, or a program — the transport cost is often billable as part of their support shift. The driver is separate; the support worker’s time is claimable as Assistance with Daily Life.

Core Supports — Social and Community Participation

For outings tied to community participation goals — attending events, social programs, regular group activities — transport costs can sometimes be claimed under this category. Your Support Coordinator can confirm which category applies to your specific goals.

Not sure which category applies? Your Support Coordinator or LAC can confirm which funding category covers your transport needs. If transport isn’t in your current plan, we can provide documentation to support adding it at your next plan review. Call us on 1800 211 531.

What Adelaide’s Wheelchair Accessible Bus Landscape Actually Looks Like

It’s worth being honest about the options. Adelaide has several disability transport providers — and most of them do a good job of getting a single wheelchair user from A to B in a modified van or car.

What’s almost entirely missing is a vehicle specifically set up for the wheelchair user to travel with other people — their support network — in the same vehicle, on the same trip.

  • Standard WAV vans: 1 wheelchair position, driver only — no room for support workers or family
  • Access taxis and SATSS: subsidised but individual, no support worker travel
  • Adelaide Metro: partially accessible but not suitable for complex needs
  • iCOMMUNITY Australia’s bus: 1 wheelchair position + up to 4 passengers — the group travels together

For participants with complex communication needs, autism, anxiety, or other conditions where familiarity matters, having a known support worker in the vehicle isn’t a luxury. It’s what makes the trip work.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a support worker ride in the bus with the wheelchair user?

Yes — this is one of the key features of iCOMMUNITY Australia’s bus. The vehicle carries the wheelchair user plus up to 4 additional passengers, which can include support workers, family members, or carers. The support worker’s time on-shift during the journey is claimable separately under Assistance with Daily Life.

What types of wheelchairs does the bus accommodate?

The bus accommodates both manual and powered wheelchairs. The chair is secured using a professional 4-point tie-down system with lap and shoulder belt restraints. If you have a particularly large power chair or scooter, contact us before booking to confirm compatibility.

How do I pay — do I need to pay upfront?

If you have NDIS transport funding in your plan, iCOMMUNITY Australia claims directly from your NDIS plan. You don’t pay out of pocket. If you’re self-managed or plan-managed, we provide invoices in the correct NDIS format. Private bookings are also available.

Can I book the bus for a regular weekly run?

Absolutely. Many of our participants use the bus on a recurring schedule — weekly therapy, regular social programs, school runs. Regular bookings are prioritised and we work with your schedule to ensure consistency.

How far in advance do I need to book?

We recommend booking as early as possible, especially for regular runs. For one-off trips, 48–72 hours notice is ideal. For urgent or same-day needs, call us directly on 1800 211 531 and we’ll do our best.

Is iCOMMUNITY Australia a registered NDIS provider?

Yes. iCOMMUNITY Australia is a registered NDIS provider based in Edwardstown, South Australia. All our drivers hold current Working With Children checks, police clearances, First Aid and CPR certification, and manual handling training.
